Athletics Update

 Dear Athletes, Parents/Guardians                                                                    October 15, 2020

The staff at F.P. Walshe School is very excited to get our athletics program up and running for the 2020/2021 school year. We have been given direction from Livingstone Range School Division to begin preparations for offering extra-curricular opportunities for our students with the earliest start date set for Monday, Oct. 19. We will continue to follow recommendations from Alberta Health Services, Alberta Education and Livingstone Range School Division as we develop our school athletics re-entry plan. Below is an update from the re-entry plan.

Participant health and safety is our highest priority. To be safe and successful in returning to sport, we must follow all public health guidelines, practice physical distancing, good hand hygiene and continue to act responsibly.  All student athletes and coaches are required to do the Alberta Health Daily Checklist (self screen) and not participate in activities if they are experiencing any of the listed symptoms.

We are excited to begin by offering Junior and Senior Volleyball this year. Below is more detailed information regarding practice times and protocols that we will be following for Volleyball.

Practice times will begin as follows:

Jr. B boys and girls - Monday and Wednesday 3:45-4:45pm. Game days are Fridays.

Jr A boys and girls - Tuesday and Thursday 3:45-4:45pm. Game days are Fridays.

Sr and JV girls - Tuesday and Thursday at 5:15-6:30pm, Wednesday 7-8:15pm. Game days are Fridays.

Sr and JV boys - Monday and Wednesday at  5:15-6:30pm, Tuesday and Thursday at  7-8:15pm. Games days are Fridays.

We will be taking extra precautions including but not limited to: sanitizing equipment, sanitizing changing rooms in between practices, physical distancing, use of personal protective equipment (masks), controlling traffic flow with designated entrance and exit doors (main door entrance, south door exit), and not allowing spectators at this time. We are working on providing a live-stream option for those who are interested in watching the games. We also ask that all athletes arrive no earlier than 5 minutes prior to their designated start time.

Participants who become symptomatic during a game/practice are required to be isolated from others and must return home immediately. Athletes must have a parent/guardian or designated adult (over 21 years of age) available to pick them up promptly should they become symptomatic while away for a game.

The League games will be run in cohorts with a maximum of 50 participants (this includes players and coaches). The games will include teams only in the Livingstone Range School Division at this time. The season will consist of two away trips, (two games at a different school in the division) and our school hosting one Friday. There will be a two week break at the end of the regular season, and the season will finish with crossover games with the other cohort in the division. All games will be played on Fridays after school starting on October 30th. Transportation for games will be by bus, and all athletes and coaches will be required to wear a mask while on the bus.

For our grade 6 students we are working on a lunch hour volleyball skill development program (more information to come).

Fees are yet to be determined as we are finalizing our estimated costs for the season (more information to come).

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make preparations for a safe re-entry plan for school athletics. We are looking forward to the upcoming volleyball season, and if you have any questions please contact me, Aimee Sandham, at sandhama@lrsd.ab.ca or (403) 553-4411.
